After being sick for two weeks we were starting to get a bit stir crazy on the boat so we decided to plan a trip to the Rio Agua Caliente (hot water river) on lake Izabal. The waterfall is a 25 ft hot spring that spills into a cool stream, running down from the nearby mountains. We walked through the villages and farms along a dirt road and then came to a well maintained path through the jungle.
At the waterfalls we sat at the base and let the hot water pummel us, soaked in the hot spring at the top of the falls, and applied healing mineral mud to our skin at the urging of a guide. It was what I imagine a spa day would be but with giant toads, worms in the water, and the pungent smell of bat guano coming from the caves behind the falls.
That night we sat on the bow of the boat to watch the sunset and listen to the din of the automatic weapons fire echo around us. Guatemala is a beautiful and crazy place.
