We have officially arrived at the boat after our short stop in Houston to visit Adam’s family and a brief stint in Guatemala City. From Guatemala City we took a 6 hour bus ride to Rio Dulce and then a 45 minute boat trip to the marina. We arrived to find Zenobia in great condition; practically mould free and only one or two weird bugs having taken up residence – thankfully none of them cockroaches. We are three days in and we sort of feel that we have picked up right where we left off. Most things are still the same on the Rio Dulce including the intense heat! We stepped off our air conditioned bus into the sweltering air and burst into a full sweat – to say that the heat was oppressive would be an understatement. We’ve basically spent most of our time trying to hide from the sun and trying to stay cool. So far we’ve avoided the sun but we can’t figure out how we are going to manage to not be insanely hot. Adam did have some goose bumps on his arm during an evening downpour but he still felt really warm so I’m not sure that it counts. In other update news, we haven’t been able to get the stove working yet so we’ve been subsisting on the meagre snack items that we grabbed before our ride left to take us to Zenobia. For the last two days Adam has been eating refried beans and cream cheese on bread for every meal and I have been dining on peanut butter from the jar. Sadly orange crush has also become an acceptable breakfast drink out of necessity. Thankfully today we got a reprieve. We were able to motor the 3 hours upriver into town and bought some additional supplies. We’ve dug out our camping stove and hope to have a real meal tonight! We’re not sure how long we’re going to stay but as I write this Adam is enjoying the sound of weapon’s fire in the distance and suggesting that maybe hurricane season out on the Caribbean Sea might not be so bad after all. |
