On the beach - post crash
We decided to abandon our goal of tidying up the boat and headed to shore for some land exploration of Port Santo. We opted to land on the beach instead of going to the marina which turned out to be much more of an adventure than we had bargained for. We hit the beach hard and dug the bow into the sand; I got quite a soaking as waves continued to roll over us into the dinghy. We managed to salvage the Tasha Yar and drag her up to the beach to wait with the nude sunbathers for our return.
Porto Santo is very much a resort town; we overheard British accents and saw an awful lot of fair-haired, sunburned families. The island is really something to see. It is very arid and it seems to be made up of a series of lava gravel hills with nothing growing but a few cacti here and there. We found an area that we think must be a municipal garden but consisted largely of sand and walking stones. The beaches are amazing and stretch from one end of the island to the other – if I didn’t burn in the sun and Adam didn’t hate the sand I’m sure that we would really enjoy them! Is tropical paradise wasted on us? Maybe, but we have been taking advantage of the warm-ish water and swimming and snorkeling and I’m even working on my tan – from under my hat and sun moo-moos!
