A place to call home.
Well due to some unforeseen engine difficulties, our water pump is leaking coolant and we need to replace it, we are still in the marina in Lajes. Adam has been corresponding with a service in Horta that specializes in marine parts and supplies though, and they assure us that they can get items shipped from mainland Europe or the US in a week or two. Right now the problem seems to be tracking down the actual pump which is proving to be difficult. We’ve decided to sail for Horta tomorrow, Friday, and we’ve been advised by a mechanic that as long as we only use the engine for short periods of time at low speeds and keep the coolant topped up, we should be able to use it to get in and out of marinas. On the bright side of things, while we were waiting to hear back from Horta we did some hiking and found a great waterfall and pool that was once an old mill. The area was beautiful and we got in a quick swim. Well, technically Adam pushed me in and I swam back to the edge of the pool, but he splashed around for a bit even though the water was REALLY cold. We also saw a few old houses in Fazenda with for sale signs and we are contemplating buying a shack as a fixer-upper. Adam fancies that he might want to have some chickens (can you be allergic to chickens?) and I wouldn’t mind having a garden for a sheep and a cow. Some of the houses don’t come with windows or a roof, and running water is questionable, but the taxes are probably pretty low, the people are friendly, and you can’t beat the view.
