We were very excited to be able to leave the dock. We were so happy to be back out on the water. We were so sick by the end of the day.
Well, I was sick and Adam was queasy. . . where did our sea legs go in just two weeks? We checked the forecast for the day and anticipated moderate winds for the trip from Horta to Sao Jorges; with possible showers, and manageable waves. The route to Velas, our desired port, lies down a channel between Sao Jorges and the island of Pico and as we entered the channel the wind started gusting up to 30 knots and the waves got really big really fast. The swell was coming from the north north/west and as we were headed east we were getting hit on our side (beam) by the waves and rolling a lot. I kept it together until I went down below to get our foul weather gear when the skies turned grey. What a rookie mistake, you should remember to send the cabin boy down below when the boat is rolling! Adam was able to fight through his queasy feelings and in 3 or 4 hours we were arriving in Velas and anchoring in the harbour. A bit wet, a few pounds lighter, and eager to relax for the rest of the night.
