Yesterday we rented a car and drove through the Teide National Park up to Pico del Teide, which is the island’s volcano and at 3718 m (that is 12,270 ft for the older readers) it is the largest peak in all of Spain. We drove up about 2500 m (8250 ft) but had to stop there because the cable car that brings you to the top of the mountain was closed for the day due to high winds. We had been told that seeing the national park was like being on the moon and it definitely felt like we were on another plant. As you ascend the road goes through a pine forest which lasts for several levels, the trees getting smaller as you climb higher. At the plateau you look out onto brown and red sand and lava fields with sharp points of rock jutting out of the surface. The colours and the scale were really amazing – it is one of the most interesting places that we’ve seen yet. Adam was so inspired by the landscape he was moved to quote scenes from Star Wars and it was such a great day that I didn’t even mind. On our way back down the mountain we stopped in Puerto Cruz, a beach town, and wandered around. It was Sunday so most of the stores were closed except for the restaurants and tourist shops but we did manage to find a Thai restaurant and Adam ate something other than pizza for a change. We headed out in the dark and managed to find our way back to the highway and our little car had just enough power to practically keep us doing the speed limit the whole way home.
